Knucwentwecw Society

History

In September 1992, Cariboo Tribal Council received its funding from Indian Northern Affairs Canada to begin the pre-planning phase for a Child and Family Services Agency for Alkali Lake, Canoe/Dog Creek, Soda/Deep Creek, Canim Lake and Williams Lake Indian Band.  Roy Christopher from Canim Lake was contracted to co-ordinate this process.  He sub-contracted Doreen M. Johnny in September 1993 to provide technical advice and support.

Midway through the planning phase Roy resigned and Alkali Lake withdrew from the project.  Doreen carried the project through to completion and implemented the program after the Ministry for Children and Families, Department of Indian Affairs, and Cariboo Tribal Council signed an Interim Delegation Agreement on October 13, 1995.

Northern Shuswap Family and Child Service Society (NSFCSS) was incorporated on April 24, 1996 under the directorship of Art Paul, Kathy Hinter, Verna Keener, Doreen M. Johnny, and Ken Grant.  All of whom resigned shortly thereafter and thus the first operating Board of Directors consisted of:

 Williams Lake                       Kathy Hinter

                                              Charlie Gilbert

Canim Lake                          Lorna Amut

                                             Laurine Vilac

Canoe Creek                        Clara Camille

                                              Lillian Harry

Soda Creek             Verna (Bonnie) Keener

                                              Edith Sellers

On November 7, 1996 Verna (Bonnie) Keener passed away.  Bonnie was with the Society from the planning stages and then served on the Board of Directors.  The Society dedicated the children’s room in Bonnie’s name.

In March 11, 1997 we changed our name to Knucwentwecw which is a Northern Shuswap word that means “helping each other”.

On July 29, 1998 we lost another Board Member as Martha Lorna Amut passed away.  Lorna was another board member who was with the Society in the planning stage.  The Society dedicated the Bursary fund in Lorna’s name.

On June 18, 1999 the Delegation Enabling Agreement was signed by the Knucwentwecw Society, Ministry for Children and Families and Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Canada.

Our current Board of Directors are:

Williams Lake                           Lynne Gilbert

                                                 Chris Wycotte Sr.

 Canoe Creek                           Marie Camille

                                                  Elizabeth Bill

 Soda Creek                              Gladys Phillips

                                                  Gordon Keener

 Canim Lake                              Helen Henderson

                                                  George Pete
